      Certified Court Reporters



      Court reporter certification  

      The State Board of Examiners of Court Reporters, under the direction of the Supreme Court, oversees court reporter certification and court reporter conduct. 

      The board reviews applications for both certification and temporary certification, and it conducts examinations twice a year.

      The board also reviews complaints made against a certified court reporter.

      The exam  

      You must pass a written exam that tests your knowledge with a passing score of 70% or better.

      You must also pass a dictated test that covers:  

      • 180 wpm medical testimony, two-voice, five minutes;  

      • 200 wpm solid matter, one-voice, five minutes;

      • 225 wpm ordinary testimony, two-voice, five minutes; and  

      • Maintain an accuracy rate of 95% or better for all three portions.  

      Test results are not available the same day as the examination.  

      Following these tests, a written procedures exam will be sent by mail. It must be completed satisfactorily before certification is recommended.

      • May 18, 2020, exam canceled per board order.

      • October 26, 2020

       

      Annual registration 

      Official court reporters and freelance court reporters must register annually and pay an annual fee. A renewal form is mailed on or before May 1.

      File a complaint against a court reporter

      Anyone can file a complaint against a court reporter. The board reviews complaints and can take action to discipline the reporter.
